One person found this helpful. Ah, the hopeful outlook of the '80s, before everyone knew all the nasty things you could get from sleeping with someone.
I loved this record then, and it still sounds fresh and rocking after all these years, thanks to Debora Iyall's aggressive vocals. However, the album grew on me with repeated listenings and soon grew to like it as much as their first album It's a condition , though it did seem to make a nod in a more commercial direction. All we need now is the re-release of "It's a Condition". As an added treat, you get the "Never Say Never" E. Debora Iyall's voice had a disconnected condescending quality that inspired lust and erotic vibrations.
Benjamin Bossi's Sax playing needs to be singled out as a highlighted element as well. His impact is still felt today. His solos have been included in popular video games. He has transcended his artisic medium. Zincavage kept the pace of the songs with a sometimes hostile bass rhythm that was thick and fluid. The other instrumentation, of Wood and Carter, stuck to his bass-lines like they were taffy.
Ultimately this band's success was victimized by the image obsessed era they arrived in; the 80's. If Debora Iyall had the figure of a Jessica Simpson, they would have had the full force and resources of their record company's marketing department behind them. Another Romeo Void classic. In the hushed intro, Debora practically stumbles over words, trying to get them out just right. Frank and Peter together etch a line, then Frank takes off on a bass run that is the erratic heartbeat of the song.
A fortuitous airing of the debut album on the tour bus of The Cars by a roadie resulted in Ric Ocasek expressing interest in Romeo Void and bang! Nvr Say Nvr was released on and was instrumental in getting a licensing deal set up with Columbia, which released the EP.
Great songs. Inspired playing. Frank remembers the interactive, but not improvisational, style they had, always allowing for change and chance within the structure.
Peter wanders edgily around, charting a caustic environment on guitar, Debora sketches an unfamiliar landscape using an uncommonly familiar set of strokes. I have something to say. Romeo Void's best known song is "Never Say Never", which contains the famous line "I might like you better if we slept together. Phares concluded that the song was "a subversive, influential classic" and "one of new wave's most distinctive and innovative moments. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
American rock band. The band's most popular song, "Never Say Never" exhibits a "sexy yet sneering and detached essence" in what has been hailed one of the greatest lines in rock history: "I might like you better if we slept together".
AllMusic called it "a smart, sexy, and spellbinding slice from one of the best and most creative and overlooked artists of the mid-'80s. All Media Network. Retrieved February 21, East Bay Express. Flashbacks to Happiness: Eighties Music Revisited. Post Punk Diary: — Macmillan Publishers. Retrieved September 14, — via Rock's Backpages. Trouser Press. Romeo Void had exceptional musicians, and every song on "Instincts" is better than most of the fluff being churned out by generic pop bands today.
Deborah's vocals are truly unique and very powerful in their raw expressiveness. The band is equally superb, with the sax player adding basically another lead voice to the proceedings. There's a wide range of styles, particularly on Instincts, which includes the minor radio hit "A Girl in Trouble is a Temporary Thing.
They even included both the "clean" and regular versions of "Never Say Never", so this a very complete package. This is a great CD set from an under-rated band. Pick it up while it's still available! Two great albums from a much under-rated American band. A great two-disc set by a great bay area band. Timeless music from a decade of often mediocre sounds. Highly recommended for fans of RV.
