Features Interviews Lists. I think Cat Stevens is perhaps too ambitious here. Nothing wrong with ambition, but that's if you can pull it off.
Cat should perhaps be congratulated for a change in style, where it really works in the first track, but the tracks next up feel fairly uninspired and aren't very exciting. The Hurt and How many times are a bit painful, and later and I dream are only alright, making this below par cat. No matter how many times I listen I can't get into this album.
I just listen to the first track, which doesn't make for much of an album. The album lacks cohesion, and there is too much musical confusion, compared to the winning simplicity of his other works. I don't really get what he is singing about either most of the time.
However, I don't think the drop in quality isn't as large as many make out. I'd give it 5 stars for effort. Cat was obviously feeling restless. Despite featuring some great vocals and instrumentation this album is slightly flawed. I give it 3 stars purely on the merit of the first track. I think there's too much weaker material. Not the first album to buy. You might want to buy the whole album to complete your collection. If you are new to Cat, you might want to buy teaser and the firecat instead, or his next album Buddha and the chocolate box, where he returns to his winning formula.
It is not the usual collection of songs. I have this on vinyl. It is one of Cat Stevens' albums that seems to have slipped out of public memory, but in my opinion, one of the best. It is not the usual collection of songs, it's more like an oratorio, and intensely personal. Highly recommended for any Cat Stevens aficionado. However, he himself thought his music too predictable, leaving him in a creative rut. He decided to write and produce his next album himself, surprising many others, given that Alun Davies , his close friend and first guitar in his backing band, and his producer, Paul Samwell-Smith in particular, were instrumental in assisting Stevens to form the definitive signature sound that had brought Stevens to the height of his stardom.
Stevens came to realise that the music that he had always loved originated not as rock and roll , but what he had been introduced to as "black music". Lead Belly instantly came to mind, who had been one of his favourites. In his mind, he'd learned about "black music" almost through the back door, while also being moved toward both musicals and acoustic folk music.
In deciding to drop all the musical influences in his band, he hoped to foster those early soulful sounds himself.
